Government Urged to Introduce Streaming Levy to Fund British Productions
The UK film and TV industry could see a new source of funding if MPs’ latest recommendations are adopted. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee has called on the government to explore introducing a levy on the UK revenues of major streaming platforms.
The idea is simple: a small percentage of the billions generated by platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ would be reinvested directly into British film and television, with a strong emphasis on independent productions. The proposal mirrors successful schemes already in place across Europe.
Supporters say the measure would help ensure the UK’s creative sector remains globally competitive, while providing crucial backing for new and emerging voices in the industry.
